In calling Swiss object posters “witnesses to the high level attained by Swiss graphic art,” Eric Kellenberger refers to their “iconographic composition.” “Icon” surely describes the posture of the cigar here: It’s simply there, unadorned–no claims or slogans–and unmissably big; just walking past it would allow plenty of time for the Splendid brand name to sink in. Neukomm, a native of Bern, worked as a freelance graphic artist in Barcelona from 1926 to 1928 and soon after opened an ad agency in Paris with his younger brother Emil Alfred. In 1939 both prudently returned to Switzerland where Fred took charge of the Basel office of another Paris agency. This is the larger format.
