Lot 484: Slavery Related Book, 1832 History
Black History
1832 Book, “CLAIMS OF THE AFRICANS: or the History of the American Colonization Society,” Very Good.
6” x 4,” 252 pages, original marbled covers, the front having been detached, then sewn back on, now nearly detached again. Apart from some light age toning and a rare, scattered toning spot, the innards are in great shape and completely legible. Written in a question and answer format, in which children ask rather sophisticated questions and receive in-depth answers, this small book provides a complete, precise, and detailed history of the American Colonization Society. Formed in 1816, the Society’s aim was to send freed black slaves back to a Colony in Africa (in fact, that is exactly how the modern country of Liberia was born). We know of no better source for information on this interesting Society and its important efforts to help American slaves.
