YELLOW SUBMARINE (1968) - Jon Cramer Hand-painted Early Draft Yellow Submarine Exterior Design

An original hand-painted early draft design of the Yellow Submarine from the production of George Dunning's 1968 animated Beatles film. Created in 1967, this is believed to be the earliest depiction of the Yellow Submarine that has come to market. It was created by Jon Cramer, a commercial artist and designer for TVC London, at his home in Richmond, Surrey. The Beatles held a model of Cramer's submarine design in publicity photographs taken in November 1967.

The design is rendered in pencil and watercolours, and it differs from the final version. Small amendments were made to Cramer's initial concept, notably the removal of the letter "P". The top edge of the paper is uneven, and the design exhibits signs of age, including some discolouration and small holes.

Accompanying the lot is a printed promotional image of the Beatles holding the submarine model; a black-and-white photo of Cramer; a printed copy of a letter handwritten by Cramer's wife Sandra; and a printed copy of a letter of authenticity from Cramer's son, Jason. Dimensions: 42.5 cm x 55.5 cm x (16 3/4" x 21 3/4")

Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.

Additional Information:

In 1968, Jon Cramer filed a copyright claim when toys and other promotional material featuring the Yellow Submarine were going to be distributed. A copy of the counsel's opinion on the copyright claim is included with the lot, as is a letter from the solicitors, dated "28th June 1968", informing Cramer that his claim was not accepted.
