1855-O $1 Gold Indian. Type 2 Gold Dollars were struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1855 only, which makes the issue essential to a gold type set from this southern branch mint. The mintage of 55,000 pieces also consigned it to the class of better dates within the difficult Type 2 design, far scarcer than the 1854 and 1855 Philadelphia Mint issues. This lovely representative is well struck save for the 8 in the date, which is opposite the highpoint of the portrait. The radiant yellow-gold surfaces display extensive frost well into the fields, and no deep blemishes are present. Portions of the upper wreath are attenuated, as made from a lapped die. (#7535)
