CW¥Miscellaneous
May 26, 1865 Original Pen and Pastel Sketch: 'Nelson Boarding the San=Joseph,' Fine.

Original pastel and ink sketch, 6.5' x 9.5,' is signed by a 19th century artist 'Alfred D. Whitehouse,' and depicts a battle from the Napoleonic wars, in which British Commodore Nelson helped defeat the French Fleet in the Battle of the Nile (1798). This sketch depicts one of NelsonÕs lesser-known battles. This simple drawing is composed on a light brown sheet with cardstock backing, edge-chipping and tears along lower left edge. The detailed sketch shows the fighting aboard the San Joseph from the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, with highlights of the shipÕs rigging and planking, hand-to-hand combat, period uniforms and clothing, swords, guns, cannon and a stack of cannon balls. Mounting remnants on verso, and abrasions from removal along bottom. An interesting sketch by a period artist and military enthusiast.
