4' x 2.5.' 'From C.L. LochmanÕs' photograph gallery, Carlisle, PA, no date. Wear to corners, soiling to portions of CDV but sepia-toned vignette image is crisp and clear. Van Vliet (1841-1891), U.S. 3rd Cavalry and 10th Cavalry, served in the Civil War and later fought in the 'Indian Wars.' Achieved rank from Brevets up to Lt. Colonel. Fought at Ft. Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hills, Black River Bridge, Vicksburg, and other battles. In 1866 he commanded Fort Hualpai in Arizona. Also was part of CrookÕs Big Horn and Yellowstone expedition, and took part in operations against Chief Geronimo in New Mexico and Arizona.
