1878 Pattern Half Eagle. Copper, reeded edge. This Rarity-7 pattern in copper (some are gilt) was designed by William Barber. His distinctive head of Liberty wears a large cap ornamented by two heads of wheat and with LIBERTY incused on the band; IN GOD WE TRUST curves above. For the reverse, Barber used a small eagle with seemingly outsized raised wings holding an olive branch with seven leaves in the right talon and three long arrows in the left; E PLURIBUS UNUM sits above between the wings. Minor fingerprint flyspecks on the obverse. A choice but not gem-quality example, this retains its coppery red color better than most (which have toned to brown) and is a strikingly attractive reminder of "what might have been" had this design been voted in as a circulating coin.
