1880 Pattern Goloid Metric Dollar. Aluminum, reeded edge. Rarity-8 in aluminum. This is by far the finest known aluminum strike of the Goloid Metric dollar designed by George T. Morgan. It has a delightfully frosted head of Liberty by Morgan. Her hair is brushed back and braided in a know; a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY encircles the hair. On the reverse, the standard Goloid Metric reverse as used on several other pattern issues. There is a circle of 38 stars, within which the odd inscription: 15.3 - G. 236.7 - S 28 - C. 14 GRAMS; outside the circle of stars above is GOLOID METRIC DOLLAR pointing to the inclusion of actual precious gold in the alloy. In place of IN GOD WE TRUST which is usually found on America's coins of the 1880s, Morgan inscribed DEO EST GLORIA or "God is Glorious".
This is a fascinating specimen, one whose rarity was already known as long as one hundred years ago. And without a doubt, the present specimen is the very finest known. It's black-on-white cameo contrast amazes us by its depth and sparkle. Nothing problematic about the coin, its grade says it all! (Encased in PCGS holder #2415849) (#62041)
