<b>February 11, 1863, Union soldier stationed in Washington has seen the President - and he’s nothing to write home about, Very Fine. </b>
Autograph Letter Signed, Harrie Heap, 2 pages, 7.5” x 10,” on purloined “Special Orders... By Major General McClellan” letterhead from the Army of the Potomac Headquarters, Washington. Some separation at fold, and remnants of mounting - not affecting text - on back. Addressed to his sister and reading, in part: “I received your welcom letter. It found me getting along first rate but I am not able to do duty yet. When I was sick thear was a great Big read headed Irishman took care of me. If I had any money I would send you some but we have not been paid for four months we expect to get our money about the middle of March. All the Regiments in and around Washington have to leave tomorrow except us and we will stay here... You wanted to know if I had seen Lincon. yeas I have see him. He looks like an old farmer you wouldn't think he was the President of the United States to look at him. Thear is no news much here at the present. The streets is very muddy yet ... everything is very quiet. Tell Lizzie thear is a great many bows here but they haven't the rite stripe. You said I never sent you any news about Washington. Thear is no news now.”
