Free Frank, 'Lew Cass' as Secretary of War, over a large orange circular postmark, 'CITY OF WASHINGTON DEC 13,' Choice Fine. The free frank is on the integral address leaf of a letter written on December 12, 1832 by a member of CassÕ staff regarding an appointment to the Military Academy. Cass was the Governor of Michigan Territory before becoming Secretary of War. He also served in the Senate, and as U.S. minister to France, before becoming the Democratic nominee for President in 1848, when he was defeated by Zachary Taylor. From 1857-60, he was the U.S. Secretary of State.
