MISTI (Ferdinand Mifliez, 1865-1923)
467. I Pagliacci.
19 x 18 1/2 in./48.2 x 47 cm
Hand-signed pastel on paper. Framed.
Why is love always such a sad thing? Especially in opera. Most especially for clowns. Though executed with a delicate touch, striking pastels and a foreground Columbine baring her teeth like a Cheshire cat, the tears of this Harlequin clearly belong to those of Canio, the brutish, jealous and cuckolded husband of Nedda in I Pagliacci (The Clowns), an operatic powerhouse that tells the tale of relationships in turmoil with the ranks of an ensemble of strolling players. Though the title belies the tragedy contained therein, the opera’s closing line, presented in a murmur directly to the audience by Canio after murdering his unfaithful wife and her defender–a true victim of unrequited love–sums everything up with succinct intensity: "The comedy is ended.”
