Civil War Miscellaneous
Colorful Civil War Military Song Book

c. 1863, Civil War Military Song Book, with Full-Color Illustrations by Charles Magnus, Fine.
The cover reads, “Six Military and Patriotic Illustrated Songs. Elaborately Colored. In a novel form. Series No. 1.” The songs within the accordion-style packet (approx. 8.75” x 5.25”) include “Our Grandfathers’ Days,” “The Captain With His Whiskers,” “Want-A Substitute,” “Dixie’s Land,” “Young America and Ould Ireland,” and “Kingdom Coming.” Each page of the pamphlet is dedicated to a song, and illustrated with a corresponding colorful drawing by Charles Magnus. Each illustration is colored with bright reds and blues, and depict subjects from soldiers to blacks of the day. The song and illustration of “Kingdom Coming” portrays the stereotypes and prejudices of African-Americans of the day, in both picture and text. One of the illustrations also depicts two Ironclads, the first armored warships that emerged during the Civil War. The pages are now held together with tape, which slightly interferes with the illustration of “Kingdom Coming.” The novel was printed by C. Magnus’ National Publishing Establishment, and the back page is devoted to advertisements for Magnus’ other publications.
