A native of Illinois, Fuller had an undistinguished stage career in the U.S. when she became fascinated with special lighting and costuming effects. Her spectacular new routine, which she first presented in 1892, had a lukewarm reception in New York, but it bowled over Paris later the same year. Fuller’s phantasmagoric spectacle was such a success that a special theater was built for her dance company at the Paris 1900 World’s Fair. Meunier concocts a spectacular image for the flamboyant Fuller that creates the appearance of a wild ritual fire dance–a great posterist’s superior achievement. Rare!
