Civil War Publications
1868 “History of the Civil War”

1868, “History of the Late Civil War, Civil, Military, and Naval” by E.A. Duyckinck in 3 volumes, Very Fine.
Volumes 1-3 complete, 11” x 8,” illustrated with marvelous engravings by Alonzo Chappell and Thomas Nast. Still in the original bindings, with faded and rubbed, gilt-stamped spines. Minor toning and foxing throughout; the prints remain in excellent condition in all three volumes. Volume 1 contains 620 pages, “illustrated with highly-finished steel engravings including battle scenes by sea and land, and full-length portraits of naval and military heroes...” Volume II contains 660 pages and Volume III contains 642. Each volume contains approximately 20 prints each, including images of Lincoln, Grant, “Stonewall” Jackson, naval battles, etc. A fabulous read that is worth our estimate just for the content alone, but the valuable prints make it even more desirable. The first we’ve seen or offered. Duyckinck and Chappell are familiar names to us -- we’ve handled a number of Duyckinck’s “Gallery of Prominent Americans” which were also illustrated by Chappell. At $10 each, the prints alone make this set worth approximately $600! (3 volumes)
