<b>CW¥Photos</b><hr><b>Censured Secret Service Photo of Union 'Spies'</b>

<b>Civil War Stereoview, 'Secret Service Department, Bealton, VA., August 1863,' Fine.</b>
Photograph noted on the right mount edge 'Sample' with the lower right corner deliberately trimmed off so that this image would not be sold nor circulated. Photo shows four seated Union soldiers in front of their tents, at center. The soldierÕs faces are clearly visible and had this image fallen into Rebel hands, they could have been captured and hanged as spies. From 'Photographic Incidents Of The War', E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., Alexander Gardner, Photographer. A great Civil War rarity and one of the earliest known images of the founding of the Secret Service Spy network. We believe that these spies can be actually identified as: Colonel Geary Sharpe, John Babcock, Lt. Fred L. Munning and Capt. John McEntire.
