Lot 446: Two Civil War Caricatures
CW¥U¥Envelopes
Civil War Covers with Political Caricatures, Lot of 2, Very Fine.
3.25' x 5.25' each. Two different political caricatures of the era: 1. 'Wigfall on his promised descent on Washington,' (Wigfall is depicted as an Indian with a tomahawk and feathers, printed in red). No stamp or cancellation, but this envelope was addressed to 'London'. 2. 'J.D., (his Crest.),' (red-and-blue printed shield with 7 white stars and a winged demon--Jefferson Davis--sitting on a bale of cotton). Hand-canceled 3¢ Union stamp, marked 'Plainfield, Oct.--'. Addressed to James Carter of Annapolis, Maryland. Toned and soiled from age, these are still very intriguing items, reflecting the early age of American caricaturing. (2 pieces)
