Matter created a number of travel posters for his native Engelberg, a quiet, unspoilt village popular year ’round. In this early graphic poster from the Swiss designer who would become one of the pioneers of photomontage we get a giant butterfly sipping from a cheery red tulip–a playful image of spring in this meadow-strewn valley. Sunlit in the distance is the town’s major attraction: the permanently snow-covered peak of Mount Titlis. Matter studied in Geneva and Paris, created a number of posters in Zurich between 1928 and 1936, then emigrated to the U.S. where he worked as a photographer for fashion magazines. In 1952, he started teaching photography at Yale. He died in New York in 1984.
