CW¥U¥Documents
October 12, 1864, Certificate of a Substitute Volunteer Enlistment, New York City, Choice Very Fine
Fantastic, partly printed document, 13' x 8,' completed in manuscript, certifying that 21-year-old Richard Smith, a telegraph operator, agrees to serve in the Union Army in place of Lewis Reinheimer, who was the draftee! Signed by Smith, the provost marshal, and a surgeon. Lightly toned document, doublesided, with normal folds and edge splits. Intriguing documentation that suggested how the wealthy were able to avoid military service during the Civil War, and that there were able men ready to fight--for a price!
