Civil War Photos
The “Last Call” of the Sanitary Commission

CDV of Baker & Company engraving of the Sanitary Commission Fair of 1865, by John Carbutt, Chicago, IL, Choice.
A sepia-toned photograph backmarked: “Carte de Visite by J. Carbutt, Photographic Artist.” Titled below the image: “Main Building of The Great North Western Sanitary Fair, Chicago, Opened May 30th 1865.” Some very slight wear does not detract from this pleasingly detailed image.

The Chicago Sanitary Fair of 1865 was the “Last Call” of the Sanitary Commission, held to raise money to care for, in Lincoln’s words, “him who shall have born the battle.” To that end, the Sanitary Commission was much involved in the Soldier’s Homes, one of which is pictured here, its yard full of wounded men.
