Civil War Broadsides
“SUMTER SURRENDERED”

April 15, 1861 “TELEGRAM-EXTRA” Broadside Reporting the Fall of Fort Sumter, Very Fine.
18.75” x 12.5,” scattered soiling and light toning; otherwise clean and pleasing. An incredibly important piece with bold headlines “Maj. Anderson a Prisoner;” SUMTER SURRENDERED;” “PARTICULARS OF THE SURRENDER OF SUMTER;” “President Issues a Proclamation Tomorrow for 75,000 Troops” and more. The account of the surrender of Fort Sumter reads in part: “CHARLESTON, April 13 - Fort Sumter has surrendered. The Confederate flag waves over its walls. None of the garrison or Confederate troops are hurt...” Includes dispatches from around the country expressing disbelief that Sumter had fallen so easily, consternation over the refusal or inability of off-shore ships to aid in the defense of Sumter, anger with the South, anger with the North, concerns about the possibility of a “civil war,” etc. A very nice, historically important broadside that chronicled the opening salvos in what was to become, indeed, the Civil War!
