<b>August 8, 1863, Commutation Receipt and Original Transmittal Envelope, Woodstock, VT, Choice Extremely Fine.</b>
Partly printed receipt, completed in manuscript, from the 'Office of Receiver of Commutation Money,' 2nd district, Vermont, 4.5' x 8.5' document, confirming that Richard Burnham paid $300 to get out of serving the Union Army in the Civil War! Burnham, of Reading, VT, was drafted on July 22, 1863, and by this receipt dated August 8, was discharged from duty. Accompanied by the original transmittal letter, addressed to Burnham, with a printed logo of the Provost MarshalÕs Office in the upper lefthand corner; stamped and dated. Toned and stained envelope, and lightly toned document. The first complete set weÕve handled. (2 pieces)
