<b>Two Union SailorsÕ Applications For Prize Money.</b>
Two items: A 3-page document,10' x 8', in which John M. Staples, Strafford Co., N.H. swears that he 'served...as a Landsman on board the United States Frigate Colorado in the year 1862-3, when she captured the schooners ÔClara,Õ ÔJoe Flanner,Õ Schooners ÔDartÕ & ÔJuniperÕ Sloop ÔEliza BeckworthÕ Steamer ÔEugenieÕ' and eight other ships. The sailor swears that he is 'now 18 years old, am a native of Milo, Maine...enlisted at Portsmouth N.H.....' Two pages contain statements of two men who verify Staples service, a Justice of the Peace certificate, etc., with revenue stamps affixed. The second document is partly printed, September 2, 1863, Brooklyn, N.Y., 7.5' x 5', and signed with the mark of Thomas Murphy, who requests prize money due him as a 'Yeoman attached to the U.S. Vessel Augusta when she captured the prize Cambria, Aquilla & Waterman.' Light toning; a few small tears in the second document otherwise, both are Very Fine. (2 pieces)
