TRON (1982) - Program Helmet

A program helmet from Steven Lisberger's Tron. Programs, the user-built electronic beings that inhabited the digital world, wore circuitry-lined outfits, including helmets, throughout the film.

Tron is a truly groundbreaking film, being one of the first productions to feature entirely computer-animated sequences. However, most of its iconic visual effects were created using matte-photography techniques and backlit animation. The actors were shot in black-and-white on a black background, then printed on large, high-contrast film and hand-coloured using rotoscoping. This process proved to be so complicated and costly it was never again used for a feature film.

This custom-made helmet is made of white vacuum-formed plastic covered in intricate circuit-board decals made from black tape, and the inside is lined with white foam. The helmet exhibits wear from use and age, including scuffing, discolouration, peeling tape, and adhesive residue.
