DANIEL DE LOSQUES (David Thoroude, 1880-1915)
426. Lanthenay.
36 x 51 1/4 in./91.5 x 130.2 cm
Gouache maquette with spatter. Framed.
Ref: PAI-IX, 34
In this version of the two known maquettes of this work–the other was created with a bold brown background (see PAI-IX, 340)–the background spatter brings out the color subtlety, with a slightly less exaggerated smile gracing the performer’s face–essentially a fine art treatment as opposed to a poster treatment. It’s instructive to know that the differences between the two works are basically very small, yet their impact is quite distinct. Which version–if any–resulted in a printed poster is not known. De Losques was the pseudonym of David Thoroude, who studied law and started out as a law firm employee before switching to art. This is one of the many theatrical designs he created, along with magazine illustrations and caricatures during the period 1904-1914. His career was cut short by his death in aerial combat during World War I.
