Partly printed documents, completed in manuscript, from St. Louis, MO, Cincinnati, OH, and Cairo, IL, ranging from 2.5” x 5” to 4.75” x 7.5.” October 23, 1861 pass from St. Louis allowed Eben Richards, Jr. to “Pass beyond the limits of the City and County of St. Louis, to go to Ills.” Signed in print by John McNeil, Col. 19th Regt. Missouri Vols., provost marshal, with an embossed crimp seal of his office. September 16, 1862, Cincinnati pass is signed in print by “A.E. Jones” as provost marshal. And the June 3, 1862, Cairo pass is signed in print by “J.W. Merrill” as provost marshal. Verso of two of the passes provide a stern warning in slightly different language, but with similar meaning: “It is understood that the bearer accepts this Pass on his honor, that he is and will be ever loyal to the United States; and if found in arms against the Union, or in any way aiding her enemies, the penalty will be Death.” Normal toning, soiling, folds, chipping, but clear writing.
