Civil War Union Letters
Letter on “Monitor” Stationery

November 9, 1862, Letter on “Monitor” Stationery, Connecticut Volunteers, Discussing Electoral Politics, Choice Very Fine.
Autograph Letter by a Union soldier based at “Camp Ethan Allen,” manuscript text on watermarked, “Planter & Smith” paper, with brown print of the ironclad “MONITORS / Co. C. 27th Regt. C.V. [Connecticut Volunteers]” on first page, 8” x 5.25,” 4-page integral sheet. Superb content, remarking on the realization that the war would take longer than the North had anticipated:
“We should begin to think there was no further necessity of our staying longer in this desolate region, but that all would be peace and prosperity in a very few short months. If such results can be realized, creditably [sic] and honorably to the North.... One thing i do wish. That is, that a more vigorous war policy might be persued [sic]....”
The author also complains about the cold weather, describes battle strategies, and army lifeÑincluding talk of how “Grand rounds” are accomplished each day to see that each man is awake and manning their posts. Slightly toned sheet, minor wear. Fantastic content, written from an encampment near the battlefront!
