R. LEMTINY
417. Esposizione Nationale/Palermo 1891.

Palermo, the capital and chief seaport of Sicily, is built at the head of a wide bay enclosed on the north by Monte Pellegrino and on the south by Cape Zefferano. It lies at the edge of a wonderfully fertile plain bounded by hills an nicknamed the "Conco d’Oro” ("Golden Conch Shell”). Yet all this Sicilian splendor is relegated to a cameo in the bottom right of this 2-sheet Lemtiny design as the city prepares to play host to a national exposition. And what an impressive Italian pageant it must have been, featuring everything from early roller coasters to zootechnical displays and fireworks exhibitions to electrical demonstrations. And the designer does a wonderful job of promoting everything tastefully, focusing on the architectural dignity and fertile portent of the expo, while still giving a nod to the pulchritudinous muse from when all great ideas are given life.
