Lot 417: Confederate Re-enlistment Papers
CW¥C¥Documents
A Swiss Soldier Reenlists In The Confederate Army

February 18, 1864, Re-enlistment Papers for a Confederate Mercenary, South Carolina, Choice Very Fine.
Partly-printed Document, completed in manuscript, Signed by 'John Wirdmer,' a professional soldier, aged 26, who recommits himself to serving the Confederacy for the duration of the war. Also signed by 'Thos. C. Girardeau,' the 'Examining Surgeon' who certified that Wirdmer was 'free from all bodily defects and mental infirmity.' Very lightly toned paper with a few stains, and an embossed paper seal, top left corner. Executed at Battery Pringle, James Island, 'Capt. T. B. Haynes' endorses the reenlistment at the bottom of the front page and on verso. Wirdmer, who lists his occupation as 'soldier,' certified that he was born in Switzerland, and apparently was willing to continue fighting for the Confederacy although he had already completed a tour of duty.
