Autograph Letter by a Union soldier based at “Fort Cairo,” on lined, fine-laid paper with a blue print of “THE MONITOR” at the top of the first page, 4-page integral sheet, 7.75” x 4.75.” “William G. Boss” writes to his brother, describing the Fourth of July celebration that took place at the camp, which included a 12-gun salute in the morning, a 32-gun salute at noon, and a 24-gun salute at night. Boss was feeling rather “feeble,” and was disconsolate that two soldiers had been crippled when their guns had gone off accidentally while they were arming cartridges: “...they wer [sic] as fine helthy boys as we had in our company it tore their hands off and broke their arms in 2 or 3 places so they had to have them taken of [sic] at the sholder. one of their names was Warren Potter his was his right arm and the other was Wm. Fields and his was his left arm....” Lightly toned paper.
