Civil War Union Letters
Unusual Civil War Union Map/Letter

c. 1862, Civil War Union Map/Letter, Illustrated by Charles Magnus, Fine.
Unusual example of a Civil War Union Map used by a soldier as stationary on October 11, 1862 (approx. 11” x 8.5”). The lithograph on the page is a “Panoramic View of the Fortifications around Washington” and a “Topographical Map of Virginia between Washington and Manassas Junction” by Charles Magnus. The letter is written by a soldier named Theodore to his friend and fellow soldier William. He begins the letter in pencil but switches to ink towards the end of the first page. He continues the letter on Sunday, October 12, writing of the death of his sister Sarah and includes a stick-figure illustration of the sleeping arrangements in the tents at his camp. His letter reminds the reader of the youth and humanity of the young soldiers who fought during the Civil War. The letter is written on a large piece folded to resemble a pamphlet. Small puncture holes affecting all pages with minor loss.
