March 6, 1863, Confederate Congress General Orders, Richmond, VA, Very Fine.
War-date printed circular of Confederate General Orders No. 25, 8'x 5,' 2 pages, with conjoined leaf. Concerning 'An Act to Protect the Rights of Owners of Slaves by or employed in the Army,' in part: '... every person connected with the army or navy of the Confederate States, arresting or coming into possession of any slave, by capture from the enemy, or otherwise... shall immediately report the same to the commanding officer....' Also listed are the various depots throughout the South set aside to receive any recaptured slave An interesting order showing the SouthÕs direct defiance of LincolnÕs Emancipation Proclamation--which was unenforceable in the Confederate states. Published by order of Samuel Cooper, adjutant and inspector general for the Confederacy. Minor spotting, toning along edges, otherwise very crisp and clean.
