Civil War Union Letters
1861 Letter from a Civil War Union Soldier, Very Fine.
Written on stationary from Camp Benton (St. Louis) on December 1, 1861, the letter (approx. 10” x 8”) describes a young soldier’s struggles within his regiment as well as his makeshift Thanksgiving feast. The four page letter, written on a large piece folded to resemble a pamphlet, has slight tears on the fold lines that affect the writing but not the legibility. The letter serves as a window to the past, and gives the reader a greater understanding of life in the barracks. The top of the stationary is decorated with a beautiful lithograph of line formations and other camp activities, unusually detailed for civil war stationary (Lithographed by A. Mclean, Corner of 3d & Pine Sts.)
