Civil War Union Diaries
1862-1863, The Naval Diary of S.J. Wades, Fine.
A small, pocket-sized 4.5” x 2.5” ledger book used as a diary by S.J. Wades, a sailor who served on the U.S.S. Ohio, shipping out from Boston Harbor in 1862. Well worn, with the back cover coming off -- virtually all of the notations are in pencil. January 1, 1863 - “New Yeras. The Monetor wich faugh the Merrimac went down near Hatteras with 29 or 30 men.” Later, he describes an amphibious assault where he burned houses near Plymouth, NC. Most of the content is between Plymouth and Elizabeth City and the Dismal Swamp are of North Carolina. Apparently, the ship ran aground rather frequently! Most of the notations are clipped and short, but a nice picture emerges of this sailor’s Civil War experiences.
