A Confederate SoldierÕs Enlistment Form and Loyalty Oath.
Partly-printed Document, being the enlistment of George Moog, born in France, 45 years old, and a baker by profession, in the Army of the Confederate States of America, at Castle Pinckney, South Carolina, on March 25, 1861. The recruiting officer was Capt. F.L. Childs, of the Artillery Corps. Surgeon W.F. Hutchinson certifies that he has examined Moog. Moog signs on the front and also the oath of loyalty on the verso. Castle Pinckney was a fortification in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina, in sight of Ft. Sumter, where the Union garrison was holding out at that moment. How unusual that this very early enlistee was an older French immigrant, eager to fight for the cause of his new home. Capt. Childs was probably Frederick Lynn Childs of the West Point class of 1855, who was later a professor there. He was from Maine but joined the Confederacy and rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel; he died in South Carolina. Perhaps the earliest known Confederate enlistment.
