"Most beer-barrels are mighty and heavy; sturdy, strong men gladly move, set up and tap them. Despite the stereotyped image of letting the ‘stronger’ sex deal with the heavy mostly brewery-owned instrument, the wait-person of the foaming refreshment is almost inevitably a woman. In the world of the early poster, the beer-server can appear with all attributes of the erotic, seductive, young jugendstil lady . . . In few cases she does it with an approach of motherly care . . . The strong jovial waitresses, often clothed in old-Munich costumes, with up to four mighty tankards in each hand, as they face us in the poster world during the first three decades of the century, are legion. Ludwig Hohlwein has portrayed them most convincingly after the model of his own daughter” (Litfass-Bier, p. 56).
