Autographs
Letters Regarding General AmesÕ Upcoming Marriage

(UNION GENERAL ADELBERT AMES), Two letters in regards to AmesÕ upcoming Marriage.
1. Autograph Letter, Signed 'J.H. Morton' on plain ruled paper, June 19, 1870, Wheeling, WV, 4 pages, 7.75" x 4.75", Very Fine. A letter to Ames from a friend: 'It has been my fortune to see you made successively a Pro. Gov... and US Senator, and I must confess that it would afford very great pleasure to witness this crowning achievement of your career, and stand by when the law invests you with the proud title Ôhusband.' Morton writes further lamenting the treatment of the Army in the Congress: 'It may be true that Ôsoldiers in peace are like chimneys in summer timeÕ but it should not be forgotten by our Legislative persons that the seasons will change, and that we may soon have another vigorous winter.'

2. Similar letter, July 4, 1870, Very Fine. Morton writes that he will attend the wedding, but continues to complain about the Army Department: 'This is the ÔGlorious 4th,Õ but the ÔSpirit of 76Õ no longer moves me. Indeed, I do not think I could be moved by anything less than the explosion of a magazine of Chinese pyrotechnics placed in immediate juxtaposition to that rather sensitive part of the human form located midway between the head and heels. In short, I am no longer a patriot.' (2 items)
