Among major American posterists, Hazenplug is something of an enigma; virtually nothing is known of him prior to 1894, when he entered the employ of Stone & Kimball, and nothing is known of his life and career after 1908. But in between, he produced a number of distinguished book and magazine illustrations, as well as a handful of poster. In some of these, he shows the influence of his coworker for a time, Will Bradley–but in others, such as this design for a Chicago poster exhibition, the simple yet bold style is all his own. Price commented that "It would seem from his work that he had tried to combine such strength and cleverness as undoubtedly characterize Beardsley, with even a greater grace and originality than Will Bradley” (p. 165).
