"Tableaux vivants and charades were highly popular social pastimes about the turn of the century. Photography, still in its infancy, was no less popular. In the photographer’s studio the model’s picture was taken against a landscape in order to create a more lively impression. . . . This advertisement for a bitter liqueur also has something of the same [quality]. A pale young girl with a bashful expression is sitting on a wall against a background of southern coastline. Beside the young woman . . . stands a very realistic bottle with the label clearly visible. The margin on one side of the picture is adorned with the citrus fruits which give the liqueur its aroma. . . . The intention is to give an overall impression of ‘bitter and pure’” (Schardt, p. 172). Estampe et Affiche of 1898 found it altogether charming: "Affiche d’un joli sentiment dÈcoratif” (p. 130).
