ALBERT GUILLAUME (1873-1942)
393. BiËres de la Meuse.
59 1/4 x 43 in./150.5 x 109.2 cm
Imp. Moderne de Brunoff, Paris
Cond B+/Unobtrusive folds.
"In few, but impressive examples, the beer establishes a bridge between man and woman. You meet, understand each other, and get closer over a beer. . . . The free time, the shared summer leisure . . . gains in quality through the foaming refreshment from the brewery” (Litfass-Bier, p. 132). And this proud waiter couldn’t be more pleased to be solidly cementing the relationship betwixt this well-heeled couple with the help of BiËres de la Meuse, a delightful advertisement created without the typical presence of the representative goddess of the Meuse River in attendance. Guillaume was one of the most prolific illustrators of his day, displaying thirty-two of his posters in the landmark Reims exhibition in 1896 and acting as a regular contributor of numerous illustrations to such journals as “Gil Blas” and “Figaro IllustrÈ.” Rare!
