c. 1806, Kerchief, Blue on White American Glazed Cotton, 12" x 12", Very Fine.
The legend is: “The effect of principle Behold the Man,” inscribed above a full-length portrait of George Washington. Portions of Washington’s farewell address are at left, and a eulogy is at right. Along the lower edge are an eagle emblem, a square rigger emblem labeled “Commercial Union” and “The British Lion.” The design is based on a mezzotint of “General Washington, Father and Protector of America.” The figure of Washington is a copy of the original painting by Gilbert Stuart painted for William Constable. There is a small thin 5" vertical tearing fray in the fabric, beginning to the right of Washington’s knee, going down. Laid down for display purposes. Printed by the Germantown Print Works, operated by the Hewsons. This item is listed as No. 38 in “Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth 1775 to the Present.”
