H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924)
390. Batistine.
47 x 73 1/8 in./120.7 x 185.7 cm
Imp. Courmont FrËres, Paris
Cond B-/Restored tears at folds.
Gray started out as an illustrator and caricaturist; his work for such magazines as Le Boulevardier, Le Boudoir and Paris IllustrÈ was signed with the nom-de-plume "Grivois.” His diverse output also included menus, catalogues and costumes for the famous Paris music halls. He naturally joined in the poster mania of the 1890s under yet a new name, Gray. Unlike his pseudonym, there’s nothing neutral about his artistic approach in the service of Batistine cordial. In an altogether Matisse-like maneuver, Gray calls upon dropout white, fields of flat red and a highly ornamental table cloth to add depth and invitingly skewed perception to an otherwise ordinary promotional scenario.
