This justly famous image is a crazy quilt of patterns–not just in the figure’s gown and cloak, but in her serpentine hair, the embellishment of her throne, the muchness of ribbons, fold creases and drapes. The setting has a nervousness as well, with clouds pulled into shreds, repeated arches, fluttering pennants and eerie shadows. But key to this slightly disturbing design is the low perspective and skewed angle of the figure as she steps down to trumpet the event. Fabulous! This is the French version.
