STAR WARS: SEQUEL TRILOGY (2015-2019) - Light-up Promotional R2-D2 Droid Used for Film Premieres and Adverts

A light-up replica R2-D2 droid from the promotion of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Constructed by Stuart Bone, this is a replica of the iconic droid R2-D2 and has been seen at film premieres, in television adverts and at Star Wars related in-person events. This R2 unit appeared at the premieres of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, and featured in a Hewlett Packard advert.

The droid is primarily built around a wooden frame with wooden legs. It features a one-piece fibreglass dome and the white outer skin is made from double-cut card, which has been painted for strength and resilience. The front foot is made of aluminium and the side feet are made of fibreglass and plastic, with each foot housing a 24v 100W scooter motor in an aluminium holder.

The droid can be driven via remote control, with rotating dome and light effects powered by battery. The back panel can be removed, and is autographed on the outside by R2-D2 performer Kenny Baker and Darth Vader performer Dave Prowse, and on the inside by various Star Wars alumni, including Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett), Ben Burtt (sound designer) and Garrick Hagon (Biggs) and others. The droid has been intentionally distressed to appear like R2 in the films.
