CHARLES GESMAR (1900-1928)
387.Mistinguett Effervesced. 1922.
21 1/2 x 29 1/2 in./54.6 x 74.8 cm
Hand-signed watercolor, ink and crayon drawing. Framed.
Perhaps Mistinguett’s greatest talent was her ability to fling herself into any situation, equally at ease draped in pearls or in a ragamuffin’s patches. Regardless of the exaggeration or overstatement, she filled the stage with a verve that was all her own. Take for example this large hand-signed, gouache and pencil Gesmar costume drawing–or is it a lack of costuming altogether. You see, it’s not quite clear if there’s a scantily-clad Miss hidden behind that cascade of bubbles or if the effervescence is some sort of inconceivable costume fantasia topped off with an equally light-as-air candelabra headdress. Either way, Gesmar’s presentation is something special and, knowing what we do of the artist, it’s not far-fetched to imagine her making this design as much a part of her persona as her dazzling smile. For another Mistinguett design, see Paul Selten (Lot 536).
