CHARLES GESMAR (1900-1928)
386. Mistinguett. 1917.
47 1/4 x 62 7/8 in./120 x 159.7 cm
Imp. Minot, Paris
Cond B+/Unobtrusive tears at folds.
Ref: PAI-XXIII, 47
Mistinguett was Gesmar’s chief client and close friend from the time he was 17 until his untimely death 11 years later, and he created dozens of designs for her in that comparatively brief time. Here, in one of the earliest, the visual impact emanates from sheer graphic brio–an almost dizzying repetition of curlicues and swirls, growing in magnitude from the small rosette on her hat through the swooping ostrich plumes to the stripes on her voluminous skirt. Rare!
