Washington Buttons
Rare Type George Washington Inaugural Button

1789 George Washington Inaugural Button, About Fine.
35 mm. Albert WI 12 (similar to his 'C' variety). American Eagle with Shield Displayed and a Heraldic estoile with alternate wavy lines above, the outer device having 63 border marks. This one was buried for some time, thus the surfaces are softly granular in some areas, pitted in others. The button itself is somewhat wavy and has a raised 'pimple' on the obverse where an object attempted to push through from the reverse. The shank is partially present. Despite the afore-mentioned flaws, the overall appearance is good and there are lots of details still present.

These buttons were made for the occasion of WashingtonÕs inauguration as our countryÕs first President in 1789. Apparently, they were made not only for use on WashingtonÕs inaugural apparel, but also for sale to the general public as souvenirs of the event. Today, they are among the most popular of all the Washingtonia items.
