Letter Signed, “Geo. S. Boutwell,” in crisp brown ink on Treasury Department letterhead, February 18, 1873, Washington, D.C., 9.75” x 7.5,” 2 pages, Choice Extremely Fine. Boutwell addresses Chester A. Arthur, George W. Curtis, and Jackson S. Schultz, from New York, requesting that they “act as a committee to consider the merits actual and relative of the persons now employed in the office of the Surveyor at the Port of New York for promotion to the Head of that Office.” Lightly toned pages, with a small wax tear and remnant on page 2. Includes a nice engraved portrait of Boutwell.
