The year-round spa of Ascona, situated on the banks of Lake Maggiore, enjoys its surrounding delta flatlands as a sporting grounds. Long a favorite with artists, this colorful fishing village has always been a substantial resort area. This travel poster by Ernst, working in a Broders-esque vein, features the city’s sheltered harbor and Santa Maria della Misercordia church, known for its polychrome frescoes and beautiful altarpiece. Ernst, a posterist and painter, studied in Florence and under Grasset in Paris, where he became acquainted with Steinlen and the Fauvres and Cubists. In 1918 he returned to Switzerland. He worked steadily for Tr¸b in Aarau for decades, and continued to paint.
