Washington Medals
Rarity-8 Baker-588 Clark & Spies Token

(1829) Washington / Jackson Token in Brass, Baker 588, C. Wolfe, Clark & Spies, Reeded Edge, Choice Very Fine.
Rulau-E, NY-958. Rarity-8. So rare, it remains Unplated in Rulau / Fuld! A trivial pinpoint side carbon spot at lower right obverse and two tiny ancient scratches on the right side of the reverse are the only items noted. Privately issued in 1829 by this New York merchant (directory evidence indicates that the merchantsÕ names were not constituted as they appear on this token until 1829). This is one of the rarest of the Washington tokens. Because of the Jackson portrait, this piece is also a desirable member of the Early American token series. Extremely Rare. This variety is priced at $800 in Fine and $1,400 in Extremely Fine in the second edition of 'Medallic Portraits of Washington'. In our December 1999 sale, we sold a Very Fine example of Baker 589 (the Rulau / Fuld Plate example) for $862.50. We expect this slightly nicer and slightly rarer example to realize somewhat more.
