MARCELLO DUDOVICH (1878-1962)
364. Esposizione Nazionale/Bologna 1900.
33 3/8 x 48 5/8 in./84.8 x 123.5 cm
Chappuis, Bologna
Cond B/Slight tears at folds and edges.
At the age of 19, Dudovich arrived in Italy from his native Trieste. After an initial stint at Ricordi, he was hired at Chappuis in Bologna. He was there form 1899 to 1905 before rejoining Ricordi, where he established himself as Italy’s premier posterist, largely as a result of his refined yet lively posters for Mele, the Naples department store. Here we see an example of his work from the early Chappuis period for a national horticultural and floricultural exposition being held in Bologne, with a special focus being placed on beautifying hillock gardens. This sheeted lass and her potted roses are refreshingly free of allegory and fantastical elements, the exceptions being the runaway vine and the descending ethereal tendrils providing this gardener with unknowing inspiration. Rare!
